Independent and mainstream movies / black panther questions

What are  the main differences between a mainstream and an independent film ?

Independent films normally have a niche older active audience compared to mainstream films which would have a large younger passive audience. The genre of Mainstream movies is practically always Action, superheroes or sci-fi, this is because big budget movies with amazing actions scenes and good CGI scenes tend to grab the attention of their target audience which is normally young people. Independent films are usually dramas or sometimes even have an unclear genre, most of the time this also entices the target audience, Independent films often have downbeat ambiguous endings whereas mainstream films tend to have upbeat, resolved and positive endings, this is normally because mainstream films have a passive audience. Mainstream movies also set up endings to makes a sequel so they can utilise the franchise as much as possible whereas independent films tend to not make sequels.  Mainstream films also have big budgets to pay for the stars to be in the movie, locations, crew and marketing. Marketing is important in mainstream movies because of the budget, Studios need to make back what they spent and to do this they need to appeal to a large target audience. Independent films usually have a smaller budget and therefore don't need to make as much back but would still require marketing to make sure they can profit from their film.

Black panther is different because it has more sci fi themes, like the weapons and technology. Black Panther is also different to the other Marvel movies because it is diverse and subverts some stereotypes of gender and ethnicity. The narrative is very similar I to other marvel movies apart from the fact that T'challa is the leader of a country. Black Panther reviewed good reviews for its diversity and good adaptation of the comics.

4 What  made it successful ?

Black panther was successful because it was different to many other marvel films due to its diversity of characters and how many of the powerful people are female which isn't usual in other superhero movies. Black Panther was also successful because it had a big budget and included a lot of the other marvel superheroes in major fight scenes.  The big budget also helped the Wakanda seem more realistic to the comic book and therefore created nostalgia to older fans who read the cartoons therefore creating a larger audience and making it more successful.
